For me, this trip ended up being about antennae. I hiked to the top of Bernal Hill and encountered a fenced in, graffiti-covered antenna array with a 360 degree view of San Francisco.

These dish antennae were covered with graffiti on the convex side. They needed their OWN barbed wire fence, apparently.

Despite several layers of intimidating fences, the taggers seemed to have no trouble gaining access to the homely little structures within. Drifts of empty spray paint cans had collected in protected areas. Over the course of two visits, only several days apart, I was amazed to see how dramatically the content changed.

As I stood under the main tower in the quiet of the remote hilltop, I noticed a deep electronic hum and the occasional whir of a directional motor.

This is the Sutro Tower (antenna) which is planted on the top of one of the Twin Peaks. It's an amazing 977 feet tall and you can see it from pretty much anywhere in the city. It has it's own guard shack with a live guard, even.
