I'm currently working to produce a fire performance Memorial Day weekend at an event I go to each year called Flipside. On Saturday, April 26, a bunch of the folks that will be performing in the show got together to do some R & D on some of the materials we'll be using and I took these pictures of our brick sculptures.

What we're doing is burning fire bricks that have been saturated with fuel and chemicals.

Look at the little eddies of flame that develop in the right angle void area in this brick structure. The right angle shape seems to enhance the vortex action.

Each structure burned very differently. We were able to observe a lot about the physics of what we were doing by noting how long different structures burned and how the flame moved along the surface.

This open colosseum of brick was beautiful in form, but burned out much more quickly than the others because of the large volume of surface area exposure.
